"I'm very positive about the future of GIS. It's the right technology at the right time. When I think of all the major problems that we face throughout the world today—overpopulation, food shortages, reduced agricultural production, adverse climate change, poverty—these are all quintessentially geographic problems. These problems are all concerned with the human relationship to the land, and this is where GIS can make its biggest contribution. GIS is the technology of our times and is uniquely suited to assist in solving the problems that we face."

-Dr. Roger F. Tomilson, Father of GIS

Pokévision for Pokémon Go

Esri introduces Pokévision, a third-party app for the viral mobile game Pokémon Go, uses Esri’s award-winning location-based data and mapping platform ArcGIS. It help players of the game to find Pokémon around them.

Pokévision is a web map powered by ArcGIS services, which shows all Pokémon near user-requested locations. When visitors type an address or drop a pin on the map, Pokémon are displayed in real time. It helps the players hunt more strategically by displaying location changes and time spent in each place.
“When we created Pokévision, we chose Esri ArcGIS almost immediately because it was the only option that was able to scale at the rate we were growing, Using Esri alleviated many of the concerns we had with scaling, and helped us to quickly and seamlessly keep pace with our growing user base.” said the Pokévision founder Y. Liu.

Twitter feeds forecast real time water, weather and flood for Texas

The USGS Texas Water Dashboard developed by USGS is a online service that provides critical real time water information, weather and flood for Texas at your fingertips on a desktop, smartphone or other mobile device. The USGS uses Twitter to craete twitter feeds and to map the information on weather and water.

With the help of Twitter, USGS TX FloodWatch (@USGS_TexasFlood) and USGS TX RainWatch (@USGS_TexasRain) were developed to distribute water level and precipitation data: . The FloodWatch feed automatically sends out tweets anytime one of about 300 selected USGS streamgages throughout the state rises above the NWS-defined flood level, and delivers information within minutes. The RainWatch feed tweets when rainfall exceeds a rate of 0.4 inches per hour.

“The Texas Water Dashboard provides a user-friendly ‘one-stop’ picture that is of extreme use to water resource managers, with the simplicity to be used by the general public,” said Mark Null, National Weather Service Hydrologist-In-Charge, West Gulf Coast River Forecast Center.

GIS Support for the World’s Largest Airport

Taking the support of  WebGIS, the GIS professionals in Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia serve passengers with utmost operational efficiency and customer service. The GIS staff  uses the facilities  of Collector for ArcGIS, Operations Dashboard, Web AppBuilder, ArcGIS Pro, and Explorer for ArcGIS to support the work of maintenance workers, supervisors, engineering staff, general managers, inspectors, contractors, and passengers. ArcGIS capabilities such as 3D and spatial analysis enable them to deliver actionable and trusted results. Using the 3D capabilities in ArcGIS to manage tree trimming at the airfield helped the airport earn a perfect score on their most recent FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) safety inspection.
“Web GIS has transformed our team from map makers to solution providers, allowing us to be agile, responsive, meeting the needs of a 24/7 workforce,” said David Wright, the airport’s GIS manager.
