"I'm very positive about the future of GIS. It's the right technology at the right time. When I think of all the major problems that we face throughout the world today—overpopulation, food shortages, reduced agricultural production, adverse climate change, poverty—these are all quintessentially geographic problems. These problems are all concerned with the human relationship to the land, and this is where GIS can make its biggest contribution. GIS is the technology of our times and is uniquely suited to assist in solving the problems that we face."

DocStar ECM available for Esri ArcGIS

Epicor Software Corporation released a new DocStar® Enterprise Content Management (ECM) DocStar® Enterprise Content Management (ECM) connector for ArcGIS which enables organizations to connect Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial information and related documents accessible via a map. Users can easily access GIS layers and features while instantly displaying related GIS maps, data and documents.

“Our new connector greatly simplifies document retrieval and management for organizations using ArcGIS, For example, a company that owns and operates mobile cell phone towers can click on a tower location on a map and see all the documents related to that location, such as equipment specifications, service and repair orders, schematics and the like. A building owner can review assets from the top of the building to the subterranean level and download related documents in either a PDF or the native format. This tool helps organizations make more immediate and informed data-driven decisions.”said Greg Cooke, senior director, sales, DocStar ECM.

First SAR Microsatellite launched

ICEYE the leader in synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) technology for microsatellites launches its first SAR microsatellite ICEYE-X1, on ISRO’s PSLV-C40 rocket. It is Finland’s very first commercial satellite. Making further history, ICEYE has also successfully established communications with the 70 kg satellite at 05:20, GMT (07:20 Finland time) now in orbit, signaling the next step in the mission’s success.

"With this single image, the ICEYE-X1 mission is already a full success regarding our most important goals, but this is just the beginning," "We are now working to increase the range of incidence angles and to more than double the ground resolution for ICEYE-X2. We are looking forward to launching our next mission as soon as this summer."said Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and co-founder of ICEYE.

QuickDRI quickly identifies Flash Drought

Quick Drought Response Index, or QuickDRI, went operational in June 2017 as a weekly drought alarm, providing improved sensitivity to early-stage drought conditions and rapidly evolving drought events. QuickDRI relies on a number of remotely-sensed indicators. Decades of satellite data housed at the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science, or EROS, Center provide a resource for assessing abnormal vegetation and climate conditions over a longer historical period. QuickDRI was funded through a $1.3 million grant from NASA’s Applied Sciences for Water Resources program and supported with matching funds from the USGS Land Remote Sensing Program.

“QuickDRI fills a gap in drought monitoring because of its sensitivity to short-term changes, We expect it to be especially helpful for decisions related to irrigation and fire management.”said Jesslyn Brown, a project co-investigator and lead for QuickDRI operations at the U.S. Geological Survey.

GeoSciML, an OGC Standard for geological data

OGC Geoscience Markup Language (GeoSciML), amodel for  geological features  developed by the IUGS CGI (Commission for the Management and Application of Geoscience Information) and version 4.1 is the first version officially submitted as an OGC standard. This specification describes a logical model and GML/XML encoding rules for the exchange of geological map data, geological time scales, boreholes, and metadata for laboratory analyses.

“Earlier versions of GeoSciML have been used for several years by geological data sharing projects around the world when GeoSciML was only an IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences) standard. These include OneGeology, INSPIRE, the US Geoscience Information Network (USGIN), and the Australian AuScope and AusGIN projects, Having GeoSciML version 4 ratified as an official OGC standard is a huge step forward for GeoSciML, particularly to reassure application developers that GeoSciML is the way forward for geoscience data transfer. The collaboration of the previous IUGS GeoSciML working group and OGC has been a great example of effective cooperation between standards organisations.” said Ollie Raymond, chair of the GeoSciML SWG.
